Certification: Teach Like Their Lives Depend On It

because they do!

Imagine a classroom where you can’t wait to teach and they can’t wait to learn!

We partner with high performing educators to:

  • empower them with cutting edge tools that allow for the creation of outstanding learning experiences
  • support diverse learners
  • provide SEL & trauma informed classroom management
  • increase student performance
  • decrease bullying, opportunity gaps, and the likelihood of violence.

Educators are assessed and, upon succesful performance, receive certification as a With Respect LLC Exceptional Educator.

Educators – from those in the classroom, those in the lunchroom, offices, and buses to those in the office, playground, lunchroom, and board room – know that teaching and learning are some of the hardest things to do right now.

  • Acts of violence are the extreme, yet they happen daily in many places.
  • The mental health crisis is real in our staff, students and families.
  • For many, COVID left a learning gap, a mental health crisis, anxiety, and fear.
  • Learners struggle to pay attention, negotiate crippling anxiety, show up with hidden and obvious disabilities, and engage in bullying and harassment.

The stress of these are added to the day to day stresses of classroom management, meeting learning goals, ensuring students are safe and engaged, and teacher/administrator evaluations.

For learning to happen, students

  • must feel safe, and confident in their teacher
  • have their way of learning and expressing supported, and
  • be able to get what they need from the instructor, their peers, and their community

It also means our domestic Intensives potentially offer each cohort a rich learning environment with international perspectives and experiences shared in our time together. Meet the Course Architect & Your Instructor, Leah Kyaio, M.Ed.

Leah R Kyaio is the Founder/CEO of With Respect LLC (the parent company of the signature program, Teach Like Their Lives Depend On It) as well as the architect of the program itself. With a Master’s degree in education and over a decade in the field, it was clear to Leah that educators were not being equipped with the tools, skills, and practices to support their success in the classroom. The best teachers burn out in 5-7 years and leave teaching for other professions. Most of these are passionate professionals who want to support students meeting and surpassing their potential. Leah set out to change that, and Teach Like Their Lives Depend On It was born. She knew it needed to be an incubator where practice and application outweighed theory and understanding. Thus Teach Like Their Lives Depend On It is delivered as a hybrid of virtual and face-to-face learning because you can’t do what you haven’t practiced, in real time, with colleagues together. The human to human component is irreplaceable.

How does the program work?

It all begins with an ONLINE COURSE. This 12-hour, self-paced course provides the academic foundations for the program. It outlines and teaches the concepts and ideas that become the bedrock of learning.

The online course is available all year, allowing people to begin at any time their calendar allows. The course has concept assessments that require you pass with 85% or better before moving to the EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY (face-to-face).

The EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY is offered three times a year; generally in March, June, and August, currently available in the Eastern and Great Lakes Regions of the USA. These real time, in person learning experiences happen in a cohort model of 12-18 individuals who spend approximately 48 hours over 6 days in practice, deepening, and applying the ideas, theories, and concepts that were learned in the online course. This is where the rubber hits the road. It’s where we move beyond theory and walk the talk.

This is also where the EXTRAORDINARY EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION is earned.

Over the course of the 6 consecutive days, our cohort of 12-18 educators engage in a classroom where everything discussed and explored in the online course is experienced, practiced, and processed. There are a minimum of three required performance sessions where each educator exemplifies their understanding of what is being learned, how they would apply it, and what it looks like as they understand it.

The performance is assessed through a rubric guide, provided at the beginning of the Experiential Learning Opportunity. There is always room for “do overs” and time for adjustments and amendments with second and third trials permitted to get it right. At the end of the week, the successful final performance is awarded with an official With Respect EXTRAORDINARY EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION. This includes a physical certificate and an electronic badge for use on documentation, email, and other computerized interactions.

We have worked with many states and organizations to provide continuing education credit. Please let us know at the time of registration if desired and we will work with your department of education to be sure it is ready for our session together. Additionally, we are seeking the ability to provide college credit. Stay tuned for those updates!
